Through form, shadow, reflection and colour, this body of work explores the phenomenon of light. Experiences of this phenomenon are a primary concern of Rowe’s practice.
Recent Works 2019 includes a series of sculptural wall reliefs, timber-framed form studies and free-standing works presented on timber and steel plinths. Notions of protection, defence, refuge and boundary have been explored. This body of work engages with the liminal or threshold spaces that exist between the positive and shadow aspects of these ideas. Each sculpture is constructed using Australian clay bodies with a number formulated specifically for the works in this exhibition.
The work has evolved through a tactile understanding of the thresholds and limits of working with the earth. The ceramic process cannot be rushed or pushed to completion and requires a willingness to engage with the quiet, grounded rhythm established by the clay.
